Sculpture recreation
A 3D modeling study recreating Maman (1999) by Louise Bourgeois, focusing on scale, structure, and material presence to translate an iconic sculpture into a digital form.
Louise Bourgeois
Medium: Bronze, stainless steel, marble.
Dimensions: 9.3 x 8.9 x 10.2 m (33ft x 30ft)
The title is the French word for "Mother".
The sculpture builds on the spider theme that Bourgeois first explored in a 1947 ink-and-charcoal drawing, continuing into her 1996 sculpture “Spider”.
It symbolizes the strength of Bourgeois's mother through metaphors of spinning, weaving, nurturing, and protection. Her mother, Josephine, worked in her father's textile restoration workshop in Paris, where she repaired tapestries. Bourgeois lost her mother to an unknown illness when she was twenty-one.(source)

The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and protective, just like my mother.
